No Re-Pooling in Srinagar (New Phase Politics)

During the election-day for Lok Sabha in Srinagar, a capital of Jammu and Kashmir a security firing was opened.  Eight people were killed and about dozens of people were severely injured from the firing. With an increase in violence and clashes at the time of elections, the firing was forced to open by the security forces.

TARGATED AREA’S

 Srinagar, Budgam, and Ganderbal the three districts of Jammu and Kashmir was targeted. The furious mob lost its temper and turned violent on streets. Attacking the people and setting in fire the polling station.

The tentative voter turnout for the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is 6.5%, Jammu and Kashmir’s chief electoral officer Shantmanu told reporters at the conclusion of polling. Due to the violence created by the angry mob the voting rate was declined by a great number. It was much less than expected.

In 2014, at the time of elections, the total seats had recorded 26% polling for the general elections. This year, the impact of the anger and fire can be seen. The result varies by a large number.

HISTORICAL PAST

 Omar Abdullah had defeated Mehbooba Mufti in a straight contest in the year 1999. The turnout was 11.9%. The former chief minister of the state and a member of National congress stalwart Farooq Abdullah, is locked in a straight fight with the ruling PDP’s Nazir Ahmad Khan. Farooq Abdullah had lost the seat in the elections of 2014.

Budgam, a district of Jammu and Kashmir has always been in news for its constant revolts and attacks. More than 200 incidents of violence have been recorded in Big dam district alone. Incidents of violence in the constituency include stone-pelting, petrol bomb attacks, setting ablaze of a polling station, some vehicles and attempt to burn two other polling stations.

LOOSING MANY LIVES

It was a day of great tremors as many lives were lost during the incident. It was not a good day. Lives of innocent were also put under risk. Six lives were lost and 17 civilians were injured badly. Apart from this, over 100 paramilitary soldiers and policemen were injured during the attacks. A 17-year-old Amir Manzoor was killed when the security personnel fired at a stone-pelting mob in chakra area of the constituency, taking a death toll to seven. There was a huge loss of life and property during te violent attacks. The CEO said a decision on repoll will be taken after carefully examining the diaries of presiding officers.  So far it is hard to tell as for how many repolling stations will go to repoll. The situation will be examined and further actions will be taken as per that. For a wild guess, there can be 50-100 repolls. But nothing is certain yet.

It was reported that two more people were killed in Chrar-e-sharief and Beerwah areas of Bugdam district. Further, two more deaths were reported from Chandoor. Such attacks are strictly condemned and any violence is a punishable offense in the country.
